Today is the first national Indie Author Day, recognizing independently published authors!
If you are an indie author, why not find a library near you that’s celebrating and introduce yourself. You can take a book or two to give away – with a link to more information about you and your books. If you have books on Amazon.com and information in their Author section, why not link to that page also? Then please look me up there.
Bexar Biblio Tech Digital Library
Our county has a digital library! They are celebrating Indie Author Day there and promoting SELF-e. SELF=e allows you to offer your digital books to them and they make the books available to libraries in your city or state. It can go farther than that, but you would give up some of your rights. I’m going to post some of my digital books, but only with my state, Texas. Look for your digital library or talk with a librarian in your local library and see what they are doing of contact me for more information.
At my table today I will show some of my print and digital books, including my just published Immigrants Coming to America. Have a great day!
Immigrants – Who Are They?
Some immigrants come to America for jobs, some come to be with family, and some come to escape persecution.
After losing the war and enduring 3 years of imprisonment, this father became a refugee. It was difficult to escape with a wife and six teenagers but he managed to get them all into one boat with many other people. Nearby countries would not take the refugees; there were already too many of them seeking help. Once these refugees were at sea, pirates took over the boat. They took everything of value and put the teenage girls in the pirate’s boat. If that happened to you, what would you do? “I would jump into the ocean,” our interviewee said. That was just the beginning of her long journey into the unknown, bound for America.
When Beatrice Davis decided to come to America, she just did it! She sold her car and her furniture, got a visa, bought a plane ticket and that was it. She didn’t speak English, but she got a job babysitting and started learning English by watching the children’s television programs and reading magazines with lots of pictures. In six months she could read, write, and speak English! She got a job in a hotel and after a short time, she was a tour manager for entertainers. She can speak several languages and she took them all over Europe for several years. Now she has a thriving business, Sassy B Worldwide, a global entertainment production firm.
Immigrants come for many reasons – some to get away from very bad situations, refugees and asylum seekers – some, like Enrique Barojas, are drawn by opportunities to better their lives. He currently works in the automotive field and manages a service shop, but his dream is to own a motorcycle repair shop and become an American citizen.
New Book Tells Immigrants’ Dramatic Stories in Their Own Words
Immigrants Coming to America presents real-life stories of immigrants from all over the world who came to America, assimilated into the American culture, and made better lives for themselves. They came from places such as Sri Lanka, Mexico, Norway, Syria, and Pakistan.

Why? Why do we want to recall that tragedy?
If you were a bystander, as I was, you were shocked, angered, saddened, and in awe that such a thing could happen on American soil. I was in California, awakened by a phone call from my daughter in Texas. I rolled out of bed and turned on the television. You probably remember where you were when you first heard the news that was hard to comprehend, “There’s been an attack on the Twin Towers.” Later in the day, attention was div to the Pentagon where a commercial airplane had plowed into the side of it…the side where I had worked, 3rd floor, 5th corridor. And still later, the plane that plowed into the ground in Pennsylvania, killing all aboard.
Listen with me to a story of survival told by Michelle Rosado who was on the 95th floor of Tower 2 during the attack on the Twin Towers. Pray with me for those who lost loved ones, those who may still suffer aftereffects, and those of us that were more distant. Never again.
Jo Condrill Learns about Immigration while Writing a New Book
Immigration! What do you know about immigration? It’s amazing what a person can earn when they begin to write a book! When I started writing Immigrants Coming to America, it was to share the stories of some amazing people I had met who turned out to be immigrants. Two of them are Toastmasters, one is Past International President Dilip Abayasekara and the other is a relatively new Toastmaster, Michelle Fung. Four of the immigrants, I discovered, are members of my local mastermind team. Another immigrant asked me to interview her when she found out about the book, and the others were recommended by other people.
What Do You Know About Immigration Law?
As the book developed, I realized how little I knew about the immigration process and immigration law. So I contacted the dean of the local law school. He recommended two professors of immigration law and I interviewed them. I hear people argue about what should be done to improve the system, but sometimes I think they are not arguing the same issue. Did you know that the U.S. has immigration detention centers where U.S. citizens might be held if they don’t have the right documentation to get back into the country? I didn’t. What do you know about the law affecting Cuban refugees? I didn’t even know the difference between legal permanent residents and other immigrants. They cannot legally vote, for one thing.

My new book, Immigrants Coming to America, is available now! It has a thought-provoking Foreword by Paul E. White, an International Affairs Consultant with over 40 years experience in that area. In addition to the dramatic, inspiring stories of the immigrants and the interviews with the law professors, there are many references with much more information on this important issue. I believe that if we all had the same understanding of the terms affecting immigration, we might soften our stances and be open to discussion with an intent to solve the problems.
The U.S.Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is responsible for our security. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is part of DHS and they enforce the law. The laws are made by Congress and signed by the President.

ALONE BUT NOT LONELY
Whether you are alone by chance or by choice, you have the right to be happy. Happiness is a state of mind and the one thing you have complete control over is your mind. Yes, you can decide to be happy. Stand in front of a mirror. Look yourself in the eyes and say, “I am lovable; I am happy.” Smile. You will feel foolish the first time you try it. I did, but it can make a big difference in your disposition.
Remember the story that everyone has a sign hung around their neck, “IALAC.” You guessed it, “I am loveable and capable.” Wear your sign proudly. It is okay to love yourself; in fact, to love others, you must love yourself first. That is different from being “in love” with yourself. When you love yourself you have a healthy respect for who you are. When you are “in love” with yourself, you are selfish and have a “me first” attitude. If you love yourself, you are more likely to have a positive attitude towards others and less likely to compare yourself to them. You can cultivate a healthy love and respect for yourself without taking anything away from others.
CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY
Whether you are alone by chance or by choice, you have the right to be happy! Make up your mind to be happy, especially on Valentine’s Day. Envision a day when you can do anything you want to do … go to an amusement park, see a movie, go fishing, read a good book, work on a project you’ve been trying to find time to do? Please yourself. What do you like to eat? I don’t like going to restaurants alone. When I do I make up my mind in advance that it’s okay to be alone. People may look at you and wonder – or even flirt. I try not to bury my head in a book. I want to be observant of other people like other customers and those waiting on tables, carrying trays, trying to please the customers.
LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH
Genuinely happy people are the people who are able to find contentment and satisfaction without the help of others. They do not depend on other people nor live by other people’s expectations. They are living and loving life no matter what hardships and burdens come their way.
Take a deep breathe and decide now to be happy. There are millions of single people in the world who like being single.
I’d love to have your comments on this.
GIFTS OF LOVE
2. THE GIFT OF AFFECTION …
Be generous with appropriate hugs,
kisses, pats on the back and handholds.
Let these small actions demonstrate the
love you have for family and friends.
3. THE GIFT OF LAUGHTER …
Clip cartoons and share.
Share articles and funny stories.
Your gift will say, “I love to laugh
4. THE GIFT OF A WRITTEN NOTE …
It can be a simple
“Thanks for the help” note or a full
sonnet. A brief, handwritten note may
be remembered for a lifetime, and may
even change a life.
6. THE GIFT OF A FAVOR …
Every day, go out of your way
to do something kind.
7. THE GIFT OF SOLITUDE …
There are times when we want nothing
better than to be left alone. Be
sensitive to those times and give
the gift of solitude to others.
8. THE GIFT OF A CHEERFUL DISPOSITION …
The easiest way to feel good is
to extend a kind word to someone.
Really, it’s not that hard to say,
“Hey. “Have a great day!”
What’s in Your Future?
How often do you sit and think about your future–say five or ten years ahead? For most of us, it’s rarely. Maybe at the beginning of the year when you think of New Year’s resolutions, but then? Most of us are busy dealing with daily challenges and opportunities and we seldom spend time thinking and deciding what we want our future to be like. Many of us have given up on the idea of having any influence over our future. We believe that destiny will dictate. Thinking about what we want in the future, however, will allow us to make better decisions that lead to greater happiness.
That is not to say that we must CONTROL all the events in our lives. We just need to pick a point in the future and set our gyroscopes on it. Then we do the best we can to make decisions that lead in the direction we’ve chosen. This is not a linear process, but a dynamic leaping forward and sometimes looping back to see how far we have already come and appreciate the improvements we’ve made, the good times we have had, and maybe evaluate some things to see if we could have done better.
Often we find serendipities along the way. For example, when I was on the set of the movie, “A Month of Sundays,” which was filming at Union Station in Los Angeles, I picked up a voice message on my cell phone during one of the breaks. Someone wanted to buy a couple of copies of our book, 101 Ways to Improve Your Communication Skills Instantly. We followed up and the caller bought several books and audio-tape sets. In a later conversation with the gentleman, I asked how he’d heard about the book. “Jo, you won’t believe it,” he said. He related how he had found a satchel, “like a briefcase,” in the road. In the briefcase were several different books, but no identification of the owner. He took the satchel home and looked at the books. 101 Ways to Improve Your Communication Skills Instantly caught his attention and he read it. Inside he found our telephone number and called. “I’m an immigrant,” he explained, “and I like your book. I can really use it.” Out of nowhere, a stranger found our book and was influenced by it. I was not trying to sell books; I was busy doing other things. Out of nowhere, things happen to move you toward your destination. If you know where you’re going, you will recognize these “coincidences,” be grateful, and take full advantage of them.
The Rest of the Story
Now if you get that movie, A Month of Sundays, and look real close during the scene at the counter in Union Station, I’m in a multicolored blouse walking by in the background. I am what is known as “on background.” Yes, I got paid, but working in movies was not in my future vision. I have a friend who had a friend who did casting work in the Los Angeles area. I had lots of time that day to think about my future.
It’s an old story. Someone comes to the United States to become a movie star. Geir Ness was a young Norwegian who came to the U.S. to study acting. He had no connections and, in fact, did not know anyone in the U.S, but he had a dream.
In the video below, Geir is participating in an interview with Jo Condrill for her podcast show, Expanding Horizons – Building Confidence. This segment was selected for you because it fits the theme of this blog so well. I believe you will enjoy hearing Geir’s story.
Little did Geir know while he was studying acting that this very advice, “Be Yourself,” would lead him in a different direction from the one he was pursuing at the time.
Follow Advice or Change Course
Being yourself does not mean that you are “hell bent” to get what you want no matter what. It means that you are strong enough to make decisions about your life in the present, how you would like your life to be in the future, and wise enough to allow changes as you grow and change. You may find opportunities appear that you had never imagined, as they did with Geir.
Geir is a very successful businessman today. You will find his travel schedule on the Laila website and you will have an opportunity to join his fan club.
You will find the rest of the story in The Sweet Smell of Success in the podcast show Expanding Horizons – Building Confidence
The show is broadcast in 180 countries on Stitcher Radio/Deezer. Please subscribe, rate and review our podcast show wherever you listen to it. New cars will soon have podcast apps so you can listen as you travel or commute. Smart phones now have the apps available.
You, too, can produce a podcast of your own.
That’s it for now.
Real Simple Magazine – Wise Woman
The Back Story
A representative of Real Simple Magazine contacted Jo at her home in Redondo Beach, California, to discuss the possibility of an article. The editor was interested in her work in the Pentagon where she was Deputy to the Chief of the Logistics Plans and Operations Divisions at Department of the Army Headquarters, though she was a civilian. The editor was also interested in the fact that Jo was a published author and had formed a company. The mission of the company in Jo’s eyes is “Touching Lives – Making a Positive Difference.” The company, GoalMinds, Inc. was formed in 1997 in Alexandria, Virginia. Over the years the company has done training in leadership development, customer service, and personal development topics. She presents weekend retreats, webinars, and teleseminars also.
Asked: If there’s one thing I could tell women, it would be:
“Anticipate change. There have always been major changes in the world, and we need to get on with our lives. Don’t worry about what’s going to happen.”
Today I would add: Think. Think. Think for yourself. Visualize your future then make plans. Sometimes plans change. That’s not a bad thing. Do “what if” drills. What if Donald Trump wins the US presidential election? Will I lose my mind? No, I will adjust and support him, no matter what other people say because I can think for myself.
What if Hillary Clinton wins the election? Same thing. I will adjust and support her. That’s why we have elections – people raise their voices, bureaucrats follow procedures, and one person wins. No matter what you were taught in school, having a winner declared is a good think. Look at the sports teams we adore – the winners.
Books by Jo
Although only one book is mentioned in the article, A Millennium Primer: Take Charge of Your Life, Jo is also author of The Mastermind Alliance: Relationships That Can Make You Money and Memories…My Role in the Burial of the Unknown Serviceman of the Vietnam Conflict. She coauthored books on Amazon.com: 101 Ways to Improve Your Communication Skills Instantly, Quick and Easy Communication Tips, and From Book Signing to Best Seller: An Insider’s Guide to Conducting a Successful Low-Cost Book Signing Tour. Jo’s longest book-signing tour included 11 locations in the southwest. Her most exciting book-signing was in the Barnes and Noble store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. She calls the signing of Take Charge of Your Life at the Barnes and Noble store in El Paso, Texas, the most successful. Every chair in the large store was taken to the location of the mini-seminar Jo held and still people were left standing alongside the walls. The line for autographs was very long. When Jo looked out at the chairs between signing books, she saw a young woman sitting there. “My family is waiting in the car for me,” she said, “but I don’t want to leave.”
